Grand Hotel Tritone

A family-run four-star hotel midway between Positano and Amalfi, with around 60 sea-facing rooms, a private beach and saltwater pool reached by an elevator cut through the cliff, and the easygoing Italian hospitality the Costiera Amalfitana does better than anywhere in Europe.

"The family-run Praiano cliffside hotel: the Amalfi Coast view and a private beach, at a four-star rate."

9.7Location

Why this rank: Grand Hotel Tritone is a family-run, four-star hotel on the Praiano cliffside between Positano and Amalfi, run by the Gagliano family since 1957. It has around 60 rooms, most with sea-facing balconies. Its signature is a private beach in a rock alcove, with a saltwater pool, bar and the Beach Restaurant Ninò, reached by an elevator cut through the cliff; the panoramic-terrace restaurant La Cala delle Lampare handles dinner with a Campanian, seafood-led menu. Praiano sits midway along the coast, quieter and cheaper than Positano while sharing the same SS163 clifftop terrain, which is the whole case for staying here. The honest caveats: this is a four-star rather than a grande-dame five-star, and the village is short on nightlife. Best for an Amalfi Coast stay built around the view, the sea and value, alongside neighbouring Casa Angelina.

"The Costiera answer for travellers who want the Amalfi Coast experience without Le Sirenuse's tariff. A private cliff elevator down to the rocky beach, the same impossible view, and a small, family-run scale that keeps the whole thing personal rather than grand."

The Hotel

The Grand Hotel Tritone is at Via Campo 5 in Praiano, the comparatively quiet village set on the cliffs of the Costiera Amalfitana between Positano (about 2km west) and Amalfi (about 5km east). It has been run by the Gagliano family since 1957, which shows in the unfussy, personal service. The building steps down the cliff face, with the rooms stacked above a private beach reached by an elevator cut through the rock, an unusual and genuinely useful piece of engineering on a coast where the sea is often a long staircase away.

There are around 60 rooms, and the only ones worth booking are the sea-facing categories with balconies; the inland rooms look at the cliff and the village rather than the water. Décor is a soft Mediterranean register of pale stone, white linens and Vietri majolica tilework in the bathrooms. The honest advice: the step up from an inland room to a sea-view category roughly doubles the experience, so if the view is why you are coming to the Amalfi Coast, pay for it or stay elsewhere.

The property's best feature is its private beach, set in a rock alcove and reached by the in-house cliff elevator. It has a saltwater pool, a bar and sun loungers, with direct sea access for swimming. There is no sand: like much of the Amalfi Coast this is a rocky-beach platform, closer to swimming off a Capri-style bathing platform than off Positano's pebble bay.

Dining runs across La Cala delle Lampare, the panoramic-terrace restaurant with a Campanian, seafood-led menu and a strong Costiera wine list, and the Beach Restaurant Ninò down at the private beach for lunch. Praiano itself is a quiet village rather than a resort town: a SITA bus stop on the coastal SS163 route to Positano and Amalfi is close by, and the Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods) trailhead is a short uphill walk. For an Amalfi Coast trip that prioritises the view, the swimming and value over a five-star brand name and the Positano social scene, the Tritone is a strong, honest answer.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

For Amalfi Coast honeymoons that want the view without a five-figure week, the Tritone is one of the more competitive answers on the coast. Book a sea-view category with a balcony. Couples can swim from the private beach in the morning, lunch at the beach, dine at La Cala delle Lampare with the coast in front of them, and walk a short stretch of the Path of the Gods at sunset.

Family Holiday

A practical family choice on a coast that is mostly not. The cliff elevator down to the private beach removes the staircase logistics that make pebble-beach Positano hotels stressful with small children, and the cheaper inland-view rooms make a four-person booking affordable in a way the grande-dame five-stars do not. Ask about connecting rooms when you reserve.

Anniversary

For an unfussy anniversary on the Costiera that prioritises the view, the swimming and an honest Italian dinner over a brand name, the Tritone is the right calibration. Book a sea-view room, dine at La Cala delle Lampare at sunset, and use Praiano's quiet character as the texture of the trip. Most couples take a single day-trip into Positano for the scene; the rest of the week is the sea, the beach and the room.

Why this hotel works on the Amalfi Coast

Editorial · #20 on the Top 20 Hotels on the Amalfi Coast 2026 list

Grand Hotel Tritone's case for an Amalfi Coast stay is value with a real view. It is a family-run, four-star hotel on the Praiano cliffside between Positano and Amalfi, held by the Gagliano family since 1957.

It has around 60 rooms; the sea-view categories with balconies are the only ones worth booking, the inland rooms face the cliff and the village.

Dining runs across La Cala delle Lampare, the panoramic-terrace restaurant, and the Beach Restaurant Ninò at the private beach. That private beach, set in a rock alcove with a saltwater pool and reached by an elevator cut through the cliff, is the property's signature and a genuine practical edge on a coast where the sea is usually a staircase away. Praiano sits midway along the coast, quieter and cheaper than Positano while sharing the same SS163 clifftop terrain, alongside neighbouring Casa Angelina. The honest read: this is a four-star, not a grande-dame five-star, so book it for the view, the swimming and the price rather than for marble-lobby grandeur.
