Park Hyatt Vienna opened in June 2014 inside the former headquarters of the Laenderbank, a building constructed in 1913-1915 on Am Hof, the medieval square at the geographic centre of the Innere Stadt. The interiors were created by the Amsterdam firm FG Stijl, and the result is the most disciplined modern five-star in the city. The lobby retains the bank's original coffered ceilings, marble columns, and the proportions of a Belle Epoque banking hall; the rooms above are light, contemporary and unembellished, in marked contrast to most of the city's velvet-and-portrait competition.

The honest trade-off: this is a quiet, design-led property, not a grand imperial address, so if the anniversary calls for chandeliers and gilt, the Imperial or the Sacher will deliver that and this will not.
