Beachfront, Hawaiian cultural programmes for kids, the value-family option on Ka'anapali.
"The same Ka'anapali Beach, the deepest Hawaiian culture, and the friendliest price on the strand."
Because it delivers the beach and the culture of Ka'anapali at a price the neighbouring resorts cannot match. Rebranded from the beloved Ka'anapali Beach Hotel after Outrigger acquired it in July 2023, this is a 432-room, low-rise property spread across roughly 11 acres on the beach near the north end, close to the Black Rock (Pu'u Keka'a) snorkelling point. Its real distinction is cultural depth: for decades it has been called Hawaii's most Hawaiian hotel, and it runs free daily programmes in lei-making, hula, ukulele and the Hawaiian language, plus an Aloha Friends Club for children and an on-site luau. Families get the same Ka'anapali Beach as the Hyatt Regency, Westin or Sheraton for noticeably less. The honest trade-off is the rooms: this is an older, simpler property that has been renovating in stages, so the accommodations are pleasant and clean rather than luxurious. For a family that cares more about the beach, the culture and the bill than about thread count, that is exactly the point. Best for value-minded families who want authentic Hawaii over polish.
Classic Ka'anapali, at a gentler pace. The resort sits directly on the three-mile Ka'anapali Beach, one of Maui's best, with easy walking access to the Whalers Village shops and restaurants and to the daily cliff-diving ceremony off Black Rock. The layout is low-rise and green rather than a high-tower resort, built around a central courtyard and pool with a waterfall, which gives it a calmer, more grounded feel than its larger neighbours. Kahului Airport (OGG) is about a 45-minute drive; the small Kapalua (JHM) strip is closer if you fly regionally.
For the best value, book an Ocean View room to get the beach without paying resort-suite prices; for a family of four, ask about a larger category or connecting rooms, since standard rooms suit two adults and a child more comfortably than a full family. Because this is a low-rise property built around a courtyard, request one of the more recently refreshed rooms and, if evening event noise matters to you, one set back from the central lawn where the cultural programmes and luau take place.
Sign the family up for hula, lei-making and ukulele on day one; the daily cultural programme is free and the best thing here. Snorkel Black Rock early before the crowds, and book the luau ahead, as it sells out on peak nights.
On the same beach you can trade up to villa-style space or Marriott and Hyatt polish, but you will pay for it. The table sets Outrigger beside two on-list Ka'anapali neighbours so you can weigh price against amenities.
| Resort | Style | Best for | Price tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outrigger Ka'anapali | Low-rise value resort | Culture, beach, budget | Value |
| Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas | Villa-style resort | Space, kitchens, pools | Upper |
| Aston Ka'anapali Shores | Condo-style resort | Longer stays, families | Mid |
The rooms are the clear weak point: this is an older property renovating in stages, so decor and bathrooms are simple, and some categories still feel dated next to the Westin or Hyatt on the same beach. It is not a resort of waterslides and lazy rivers, so families whose children want a big water-park pool will find the single courtyard pool modest. Ka'anapali charges a resort fee and for parking, which narrows the value gap, and West Maui in general is still recovering and rebuilding after the 2023 Lahaina wildfire, so check current conditions and be a considerate visitor. Book here for the beach, the culture and the price, not for luxury or a mega-pool.
Outrigger Ka'anapali sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Maui for a Family Holiday list, where it scored an aggregate 9.4 out of 10 across our three editorial criteria of Room and Design, Service and Location. On family-specific factors, the free cultural programming and the value on a premier beach, it earns its rank. For the alternatives on the same coast, browse all Maui hotels, and for the occasion across other destinations see all family hotels. Once your dates are fixed, reserve about three months out; the ocean-view rooms and connecting-room pairs go earliest, and West Maui inventory tightens in the busy winter and summer seasons.
Is it good for families? Yes. It is the value-tier family pick on Ka'anapali, with free daily Hawaiian cultural programmes, a kids' club, an on-site luau and the same beach as the pricier neighbours. Simpler, older rooms are the trade-off.
Was it renamed? Yes. Outrigger acquired the former Ka'anapali Beach Hotel in July 2023 and rebranded it Outrigger Ka'anapali Beach Resort, keeping its cultural programming and Hawaiian identity.
How much does it cost? Rates generally open around $280 to $400 a night by season and room category, less than the Hyatt, Westin or Sheraton on the same beach. A resort fee and parking are added.
Which room should a family book? An Ocean View room for the beach at the lowest price, or a larger category or connecting rooms for a family of four. Ask for a refreshed room set back from the central courtyard if noise is a concern.
