Aenaon Villas

A tiny family-run complex of whitewashed cave villas on the Imerovigli ridge, built for couples who want Santorini without the show.

"A tiny family-run complex of whitewashed cave villas on the Imerovigli ridge, for couples who want Santorini without the show."

The short answer

Aenaon Villas is one of Santorini's smallest luxury stays: a family-run cluster of whitewashed cave villas on the Imerovigli ridge, each with a private plunge pool and in-villa breakfast, and no restaurant, bar or big shared pool. Book it for total honeymoon privacy and caldera sunsets. Skip it if you want nightlife, dining on site, or step-free access.

Why book Aenaon Villas for a honeymoon?

Book Aenaon when your idea of a honeymoon is a plunge pool, a caldera view and no one else in sight. It is one of the smallest high-end properties on the cliff, a family-run complex of individually named whitewashed villas rather than a hotel, which means there is no lobby to pass through, no shared pool deck, no sunset-bar crowd and no dinner-reservation system to navigate. The whole place is engineered around the couple in the villa, and the payoff is privacy that larger Imerovigli and Oia hotels simply cannot match.

The property has real pedigree behind the quiet. It has been recognized by Mr and Mrs Smith, whose members voted it an award winner, and featured by National Geographic Traveller, which is unusual for a hotel this small and speaks to how well the villas are run. What you are paying for is not scale or a marquee restaurant but craftsmanship, a jaw-dropping position and the kind of attentive family service that a tiny operation can deliver and a 100-room resort cannot.

What are the villas like?

Each villa is a freestanding, whitewashed Cycladic cave house, its curves cut into the volcanic rock and softened with white-on-white interiors, so the buildings feel carved from the cliff rather than dropped onto it. The villas carry individual names, among them the newer cave-style Charissa along with Zaneti, Anezina, Feggeri, Elidami and Marily, and they differ in size, layout and exactly how they frame the view. Most come with a private plunge pool or hot tub and an outdoor lounge, plus a kitchenette for coffee and snacks.

Breakfast is brought to your villa each morning and served on your own terrace, which is the single most honeymoon-friendly detail on the property: no dining room, no set hours, just the two of you and the caldera. Because the villas vary, the room you book genuinely matters here, so it is worth contacting the family before you confirm to ask which available villa has the best plunge pool and sunset orientation for your dates.

Where is it, and what is the location like?

Aenaon sits high on the Imerovigli ridge in the northern part of the caldera, built directly on the old footpath that connects Oia with Imerovigli and Fira. That path is the key to the location: you can walk the caldera trail toward Oia for the island's most famous sunset stroll, or down into Imerovigli in a few minutes for tavernas and cliffside restaurants. The elevation gives clean, panoramic views of the Aegean, the volcano and the sunset from the villa terraces.

Imerovigli is the highest point on the caldera and the quietest of the three main caldera villages, which is exactly why it suits a honeymoon. You get the same legendary views as Oia with a fraction of the foot traffic, and the airport is roughly a 25-minute drive away. The trade-off is that Aenaon is set apart even from Imerovigli's small center, so this is a base for couples who want calm rather than a village on their doorstep.

Concierge tip

Ask the family to arrange a private chef in your villa for one night, then walk into Imerovigli for dinner on another so you get both the in-villa intimacy and a proper cliffside table. Time at least one evening on your own terrace for the sunset rather than joining the crowds along the Oia path.

What are the honest trade-offs?

Aenaon earns its rank on privacy and setting, but that same smallness comes with real compromises you should weigh before booking.

How does it compare with other Santorini honeymoon stays?

Aenaon wins outright on privacy and intimacy, and gives ground to larger cliff hotels on dining, pools and buzz. Here is how it lines up with the properties ranked near it on our Santorini honeymoon list.

Choose Aenaon for seclusion and a private terrace; move to Cavo Tagoo for a pool and a proper restaurant, or Andronis for the postcard Oia address. All appear on our full Santorini honeymoon ranking, and you can see the wider field on our Santorini city guide.

Have firm dates? Our advice is to book roughly twelve weeks ahead at a minimum. With only a small number of villas, inventory for the popular months is quoted in months, not weeks, and the villas with the best plunge pools and sunset orientation, the ones that earn this rank, are the first to sell out.
