14th-century Doge palace, opposite San Giorgio Maggiore, the most cinematic anniversary stairwell in Venice. Closed for restoration; reopens August 26, 2026 as a Four Seasons hotel.
"14th-century Doge palace, opposite San Giorgio Maggiore, the most-cinematic anniversary stairwell in Venice."
The Danieli occupies the 14th-century Palazzo Dandolo on the Riva degli Schiavoni, associated with the Dandolo family of Doge Enrico Dandolo, and has operated as a hotel since 1822. It closed for a full restoration and reopens on August 26, 2026 as Danieli, A Four Seasons Hotel, with interiors led by Pierre-Yves Rochon and around 120 rooms and suites in the first phase; reservations are already open. The reason it stays on this list through a closure is the building itself: the four-storey Gothic-Venetian staircase in the Palazzo Dandolo lobby is the most photographed hotel staircase in Italy, and the lagoon-facing suites look straight across to San Giorgio Maggiore. Book it for anniversaries from late August 2026 onward; before then, the Gritti or the Londra Palace cover the same waterfront.
Room categories are being relaunched for the Four Seasons era. Ask for a lagoon-facing suite over the Riva degli Schiavoni; the signature suites in the historic Palazzo Dandolo wing will carry the views this rank is based on.
Photograph the Gothic-Venetian staircase on arrival; it is the anniversary-arrival picture. Dining venues for the Four Seasons era had not been fully announced at our last check, so confirm the anniversary-dinner option when you book, and walk to St Mark's Square at 7am for the empty-square morning.
Danieli, A Four Seasons Hotel sits within our broader Top 20 Hotels in Venice for an Anniversary list. It scored an aggregate 9.8/10 across the three editorial criteria, competitive against the field but, on an anniversary-specific factors, the angle above is what earned its rank. For the alternatives in the same Venice neighbourhood, see Castello, Riva degli Schiavoni and adjacent. For a different city entirely, see the related lists below.
If the dates are locked in, secure the room around the three-month mark. Expect the best-positioned suites to go early; in the busy season the lead time is months, not weeks. Top-category rooms with private pools or terraces, the reason this hotel ranks here, are routinely the first gone.
