Modern design hotels are the newer category: properties built in roughly the last thirty years by signature architects working to a deliberate aesthetic. The clearest examples come from three portfolios, each committed to one design vision, plus a handful of standalone statement buildings.

What counts as a modern design hotel
A modern design hotel is a property built or reconceived in roughly the last thirty years by a signature architect working to a deliberate aesthetic, rather than a historic grand hotel refreshed. The clearest examples come from three portfolios that each hired one design mind and stuck with it: Aman with the late Kerry Hill and collaborators, Cheval Blanc within LVMH, and Bvlgari with Antonio Citterio. Consistency of vision is what separates these from hotels that merely look new.

The Aman portfolio
Aman is the reference point for restrained modern luxury. Aman Tokyo (2014) sets floor-to-ceiling glass and basalt against washi-paper screens near the top of a Otemachi tower; Aman Kyoto (2019) does the opposite, low pavilions in a mossy forest garden. Aman Venice (2013) applies that restraint inside a sixteenth-century palazzo on the Grand Canal, while Aman New York (2022) brought the brand into the landmark Crown Building on Fifth Avenue. Amankora, opened from 2003, strings austere lodges across five Bhutanese valleys. Aman Sveti Stefan in Montenegro reopened on 1 July 2026 after a five-year closure tied to a beach-access dispute, so it is bookable again for the current season.

The Cheval Blanc portfolio
Cheval Blanc is LVMH's design-led maison collection. Cheval Blanc Randheli in the Maldives (2014) is a Jean-Michel Gathy composition of overwater villas around a lagoon, and Cheval Blanc Paris (2021), inside the former La Samaritaine department store on the Seine, is the newest and most urban of the group. The Riviera and Caribbean outposts, Cheval Blanc St-Tropez and Cheval Blanc St-Barth, favour a lighter, residential feel over the corporate-luxury look.

The Bvlgari portfolio and other statement buildings
Every Bvlgari hotel is an Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel design, from the original Bvlgari Milano (2004) to the 2023 openings in Tokyo and Rome. They share dark timber, brass and a clubby minimalism. Beyond the big three portfolios, the single most photographed statement building is Frank Gehry's titanium-ribboned Hotel Marques de Riscal (2006) in Spanish wine country. Marriott's EDITION line, styled by Yabu Pushelberg, and the Tony Chi-designed Park Hyatt properties round out the category with a warmer, more textural modernism.

Modern design versus heritage grande dames
The honest trade-off is atmosphere against novelty. A heritage grand hotel, a Ritz or a Claridge's, gives you patina, layered service rituals and a sense of continuity that a new build cannot fake. A modern design hotel gives you space, light, technology that works, and rooms conceived as a single idea rather than accreted over a century. Design-led properties tend to win on bathrooms, in-room technology and the drama of public spaces; heritage hotels tend to win on warmth, staff tenure and a certain lived-in softness. Neither is better in the abstract; the question is what you want to wake up inside for several mornings.
| Category | Strengths | Trade-offs | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modern design-led | Space, light, technology, coherent aesthetic | Can feel cool; newest openings still settling | Aman Tokyo, Cheval Blanc Paris |
| Heritage grande dame | Patina, service ritual, warmth, continuity | Smaller rooms, older bathrooms, less flexibility | The Ritz Paris, Claridge's |
Honest cons
Modern design hotels can prize form over warmth: minimalist rooms sometimes mean hard surfaces, tricky lighting controls and less storage than a traditional suite. The newest openings occasionally have service still settling in. And because these properties are photographed relentlessly, the reality of a standard entry-level room can underwhelm against the suite imagery, so the design reads strongest at suite level. Choose these hotels for architecture you want to live inside for several days, not for a one-night stopover. For heritage grande dame alternatives, compare with our European city hotels guide.
How to get the most from a design-led stay
Book a longer stay so the building reveals itself, and favour a single architect across a multi-stop trip for a coherent thread. Reserve a tour of the public spaces with the hotel's design team where offered, read the design press such as Dezeen and Wallpaper before you go, and book a suite where budget allows, since these interiors scale up better than down. Frequently asked questions
What is a modern design hotel?
