The Caribbean's most distinctive cultural destination. UNESCO Old Havana, 1950s vintage cars, and a small but real luxury hotel scene built inside restored historic buildings.
Cuba's best hotel depends on the trip. In Havana, the Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski is the most polished five-star, with the Iberostar Selection Parque Central the strong mid-luxury alternative on the same square. For a beach stay, Paradisus Rio de Oro in Holguin leads. Visit November to April, and note that travellers subject to US rules face restrictions on tourism and on certain hotels.
Ranked by overall occasion score. Every hotel below is verified open and bookable for 2026.
"Kempinski's Havana five-star in a restored 1910s shopping arcade, with a rooftop pool over Old Havana."
"A full block facing Parque Central, with a rooftop pool and the best walking-tour location in Havana."
"Adults-only all-inclusive on Playa Esmeralda, the leading beach-resort luxury in Holguin."
Hotel Saratoga, long one of Havana's best-known luxury addresses near the Capitolio, was severely damaged by a gas explosion in May 2022 that destroyed much of the building. As of 2026 it has not reopened and is not bookable, so we have removed it from the ranking above rather than present it as a current option. We will restore it only once a verified reopening is confirmed.
Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski is the polished Havana anniversary choice, with a rooftop pool and spa above Old Havana. For a beach celebration, Paradisus Rio de Oro in Holguin is the adults-only alternative.
All Anniversary Hotels →For immersing yourself in Havana on foot, Iberostar Selection Parque Central puts the Capitolio, the Gran Teatro and Old Havana at the door. Gran Hotel Manzana is the more refined base a block away.
All Solo Retreat Hotels →Kempinski's Havana five-star, opened in 2017 inside the restored Manzana de Gomez arcade, an early-20th-century building that was Cuba's first shopping mall. A rooftop pool and terrace look over Old Havana's landmarks. The most polished hotel in the country.
A full block facing Parque Central, spanning a colonial wing and a modern wing with a rooftop pool. The best walking-tour location in Havana and the strong mid-luxury option.
Adults-only all-inclusive on Playa Esmeralda, set within the Bahia de Naranjo natural park on the north Holguin coast. The leading Cuban beach-resort luxury option.
Cuba's luxury hotel scene is small, state-linked and built largely inside restored historic buildings rather than glossy new towers, which is part of its appeal. Havana is where the best city hotels sit, clustered around Old Havana and Parque Central within walking distance of the Capitolio, the Malecon and the classic-car-lined plazas. For a beach, you look instead to the northern cays and the Holguin and Varadero coasts. Expect grand architecture and warm service, alongside the practical quirks of travel in Cuba.
November to April is the dry season and the best time to visit, with warm days, lower humidity and the liveliest cultural calendar in Havana. May to October is hotter and wetter, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from roughly June to November, which makes late-summer beach stays in Holguin and Varadero a gamble. For a city-focused trip, the shoulder months of November and April offer good weather with thinner crowds.
Habana Vieja around Parque Central is the base for first-time visitors, putting the historic core, museums and restaurants on foot. Holguin, on the Playa Esmeralda coast, and Varadero, on its long sandbar peninsula, are the beach-resort zones for a sun-and-sand week. Many travellers pair two or three nights in Havana with a beach stretch on the coast.
Top-tier rates run from around 250 US dollars a night at the Iberostar to roughly 300 US dollars and up at the Gran Hotel Manzana and Paradisus. Service is genuinely warm, but supply chains can be inconsistent, so expect the occasional gap in menus, amenities or maintenance even at five-star level, and bring anything you cannot do without. Cash matters: cards issued by US banks generally do not work, so plan payment in advance.
Fly into Jose Marti (HAV) for Havana, or Frank Pais (HOG) in Holguin for Playa Esmeralda. In Havana, the historic core is walkable and the vintage-car taxis are part of the experience; for longer hops, private transfers or hire cars are the norm. Domestic connections can be limited, so build slack into any Havana-plus-beach itinerary.
US regulations do not permit tourism to Cuba; travel must fit one of the authorised categories, and stays at certain government-linked hotels are prohibited. Some Havana properties appear on the US State Department's Cuba Prohibited Accommodations List. If you are subject to US rules, check that list and the current OFAC guidance before booking, and keep records of your qualifying activity. Travellers from other countries are generally not affected by these restrictions.
Book two to three months ahead for the top Havana hotels over the dry-season peak. Confirm your reservation directly with the hotel where you can, since third-party availability can be unreliable, and verify a property's current status before you pay, as Cuba's hotel scene changes faster than listing sites update.
