Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is the Indian Hotels Company's South-Goa flagship, opened in 2002 on a 56-acre site at Benaulim — the village in Salcette taluka, ten kilometres south of Margao, that gives the south-coast beach strip its quieter character. The architecture is the property's signature: a Mediterranean-villa idiom (whitewashed walls, terracotta tile, blue-trimmed window shutters, low-pitched roofs) chosen to echo the Indo-Portuguese church-house architecture of South Goa rather than the more familiar plantation-bungalow style of the larger Indian resort hotels. Buildings are kept to two storeys, dispersed across the property in clusters of villas around water features and gardens, with the entire site falling gently toward 800 metres of private beachfront.
One hundred and forty rooms make up the inventory. Deluxe Garden View and Deluxe Pool View rooms (the entry categories) are arranged in the lower-rise villa clusters; Premium Sea View rooms face the lawns and the Arabian Sea beyond; one- and two-bedroom Villa categories add private pools and gardens; the Presidential and Exotica Villas are the headline units, each with its own enclosed compound and a butler attached. The 2022-23 phased renovation refreshed every soft furnishing across the resort and brought the bathrooms to a contemporary tropical-luxury standard. The result, particularly in the villa categories, is one of the most comfortable beach resort products in India.
Three restaurants and the bar form the F&B programme. Allegria is the resort's Italian — the kind of properly considered trattoria most beach resorts in India do badly, here done seriously, with hand-rolled pasta from the in-house kitchen and a wood-fired oven in the open kitchen. Miguel Arcanjo is the Goan-Portuguese restaurant, named for the small white chapel on the property, and the best place in the resort to take the South-Goan kitchen seriously: pork vindaloo, fish recheado, the slow-braised xacuti, the Portuguese-influenced bebinca for dessert. Lobster Shack is the casual beachfront grill; the Lounge handles afternoon tea and evening cocktails. The Jiva Spa — Taj's group-wide ayurveda programme — runs from a separate dedicated building with sixteen treatment rooms.
Three pools and a 9-hole pitch-and-putt golf course form the active programme. The kids' club runs through the day and offers half-day excursions for older children; the watersports centre operates from the beach itself (kayak, paddleboard, snorkel, banana boat). The property is around 45 minutes from Dabolim Airport and 35 minutes from the railway station at Margao. South Goa — its quieter beaches, its older Portuguese churches, the Saturday Mapusa market, the inland spice plantations — is the meaningful argument for the location: the property is large enough to feel self-contained for a week and the surroundings are calm enough that even guests who never leave the resort enjoy a recognisably Goan stay.
For a Goa honeymoon the Exotica's private-pool villas are the obvious upgrade — full villa compound, butler service, private dining option in the villa garden, and the option of an in-villa Jiva spa treatment. The Premium Sea View rooms work for shorter honeymoon stays; the one-bedroom villas for a full week. The kitchen handles set-menu private dinners (the beachside set-up is the standard request) with a couple of days' notice.
The villa categories scale neatly: a one-bedroom villa for the first decade of anniversaries, the two-bedroom or the Exotica Villa for the milestone. The resort handles anniversary photography (in-house photographer, beach set-up at sunrise) and the in-villa private dinner on a Portuguese-Goan tasting menu. Miguel Arcanjo's chef's table is the more reserved alternative for couples who prefer the dining room.
The South-Goa beach holiday at the Taj is the strongest Indian-resort family booking. The kids' club runs every day; the pools, the watersports, the 9-hole golf, the cycle hire, and the buffet breakfast room all handle the family-of-four-with-children brief without friction. The two-bedroom villa is the standard family-of-four request; interconnecting Deluxe rooms work for two adults plus two children at significantly lower cost.
