Taj Bekal Resort & Spa

The Taj's north-Kerala flagship — sixty-six kettuvallam-roofed cottages on the narrow strip of land where Kappil Beach meets the Kappil River backwaters, the longest infinity pool the Taj operates in India, and the only five-star within walking distance of Bekal Fort.

"The Taj's quiet experiment — a 26-acre coastal estate where every cottage roof is shaped like an upturned rice barge, and the swimming pool runs longer than the beach it borrows its name from."

The Hotel

Taj Bekal opened in 2012 on a 26-acre coastal estate at the very northern edge of Kerala, an hour's drive south of Mangaluru airport in the neighbouring state of Karnataka. The site is unusual in Indian resort terms: a narrow ribbon of land where Kappil Beach on the Arabian Sea runs parallel to the Kappil River backwaters, so the resort has the sea on one side and the brackish lagoon on the other, separated by less than a hundred metres of coconut grove. The architecture is a deliberate reference to the kettuvallam — the traditional Kerala rice barge — with each cottage roof curved into the inverted-hull silhouette that gives the property its visual signature. The resort sits 2.5 kilometres from Bekal Fort, the 17th-century laterite-stone bastion that is the largest fort in Kerala and the most photographed monument in this part of the state.

The 66 rooms divide between Deluxe Rooms, Premium Suites, Villas with private gardens, and the Presidential Villa. The Deluxe Rooms are the entry category — generous (around 50 square metres), with private balconies overlooking either the gardens or the backwaters. The Villas — clustered along the inland side of the property — each have their own walled garden and outdoor sit-out; the river-facing villas catch the sunrise across the Kappil estuary. The Presidential Villa is the resort's two-bedroom apex unit with its own pool. All accommodation is single-storey, ground-level, and built in the south-Indian sloped-tile vernacular; there is no high-rise block here.

The 70-metre infinity pool — running along the seaward edge of the resort and aimed at the Arabian Sea horizon — is the longest the Taj operates in any of its Indian properties, and the swim-up bar at its midpoint is the central social room of the estate. The Jiva Spa runs a serious Ayurvedic programme: a fully residential Panchakarma is available for the long-stay guest, and the menu of single treatments — Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Kati Vasti, Pizhichil — is supervised by a resident Vaidya physician. Latitude is the all-day multi-cuisine venue (with the inevitable south-Indian breakfast at its strongest hour); Beach Shack is the seaward beach-grill kitchen; Tea Lounge is the afternoon-tea and pastry room overlooking the lily pond.

What Bekal sells is a position the rest of Kerala does not have: a quieter, less-trafficked north-Kerala beach (Kappil is consistently emptier than Kovalam or Marari), a backwater system that is genuinely uncrowded compared with Alleppey or Kumarakom, the laterite-stone monumentality of Bekal Fort within walking distance, and the Theyyam ritual-dance villages of the Kasaragod district within a thirty-minute drive in the November-to-April performance season. The combination with a houseboat night on the Valiyaparamba backwaters — Kerala's longest stretch of backwater geography, north of Bekal — is the standout regional itinerary the resort handles in-house.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

A Bekal honeymoon avoids the standard South Indian honeymoon circuit and trades it for something quieter — the river-facing Villa with private garden, the long evenings at the 70-metre infinity pool, the private dinner setup the resort runs on the beach by arrangement, the Theyvam ritual evening drives in season. The combination with a Valiyaparamba kettuvallam houseboat night is the in-house itinerary the resort closes most reliably.

Wellness Retreat

For a serious Ayurvedic stay, the Jiva Spa runs a residential Panchakarma programme supervised by a resident Vaidya — the most considered version Taj operates anywhere in Kerala, and the reason a fortnight here can be calibrated as an actual medical detoxification rather than the spa-and-massage facsimile that the bigger resort kitchens often produce. The Villa with private garden is the right room type for the seven-to-fourteen-night programme stay.

Family Holiday

Single-storey cottages with ground-level access, the long pool, the safe coconut-grove inner gardens, and Camp Tiger — the Taj's in-house kids programme — handle the family booking. Two Deluxe Rooms with connecting access for parents and children, or a two-bedroom Villa for the larger group; the Beach Shack and Latitude both run children's menus to a serious standard, and the kettuvallam ride on the backwaters is the family activity that closes the trip.
