Maxwell Mansion

An 1856 Italianate that was the first mansion built in Lake Geneva — six period rooms in the original house, twenty-two more in the converted Stables & Carriage House, and the town's best craft cocktail bar in the old horse stalls.

The Hotel

Maxwell Mansion was built in 1856 by Dr. Philip Maxwell, a Chicago physician who chose the lot at the corner of Wells and Center streets — two blocks east of the lake — for what would become the first true mansion built in the village of Lake Geneva. The Italianate cube with its bracketed eaves, deep verandah, and centred cupola was, at completion, the most ambitious residential building west of the Chicago suburbs. It passed through several generations of Maxwell descendants and a long stretch as a private summer house, then through a careful preservationist restoration in the 2010s that converted it into the 28-room hotel that exists today without surrendering the floor plan, the woodwork, or the bones of the original residence.

The accommodation inventory splits cleanly. Six rooms occupy the historic mansion itself — formal proportions, twelve-foot ceilings, period antiques, and en-suite bathrooms slotted in without disturbing the original room shapes. These are the rooms for guests who want to stay inside the 1856 building. The remaining twenty-two rooms occupy the rebuilt Stables and Carriage House at the back of the estate, where the rustic-chic palette runs to exposed timber, 48-inch flat-screens, Keurig machines, and — in the higher categories — whirlpool tubs and steam showers. The Stables rooms are larger, more contemporary, and the appropriate booking for guests who prioritise modern bathrooms over period detail. The Mansion rooms are smaller, atmospheric, and the appropriate booking for anniversaries and the design-led.

The Stable Bar — installed in the original horse stalls of the carriage house — is the property's loudest contribution to Lake Geneva. The cocktail programme is the most serious in Walworth County, with a barrel-aged old-fashioned that has become a regional reference and a small but exact whiskey list. The bar is open to non-guests on weekends and is the reason locals know the Maxwell name; for hotel guests, it is the obvious destination for a nightcap on the walk back from dinner downtown. The gardens between the Mansion and the Stables are anchored by a heated pool, an outdoor fireplace, a croquet lawn, a bocce court, and a series of lounge groupings that read more European country-house than midwest lake resort.

The location is the second selling point. Two blocks east of the lake puts the hotel a five-minute walk from the Riviera Beach pier, the Lake Geneva Cruise Line dock, and the restaurant grid along Broad and Main. The position trades direct lakefront for quieter nights — the hotel sits on a residential block with no through traffic — and for the kind of mansion-grounds privacy that no waterfront hotel in Lake Geneva can offer. For weekend anniversaries, milestone birthdays, design-led bachelor and bachelorette parties, and writer-or-reader solo weekends, Maxwell is the most distinctive address in the village.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

Book a Mansion room for the period detail, the twelve-foot ceilings, and the only six accommodations in Lake Geneva that read as a stay inside a historic residence rather than a hotel. Dinner at a downtown restaurant, a nightcap at the Stable Bar, and a morning at the heated garden pool is the standard anniversary weekend. Mansion rooms book three to four months out for autumn anniversaries; Stables rooms in higher categories cover the rest.

Bachelor / Bachelorette

The Stables wing — barn-themed and contemporary — handles groups of eight to sixteen better than any other Lake Geneva property. The Stable Bar is the on-site destination that removes the need to arrange transport for the first round, and the croquet lawn and bocce court give the daylight programme structure. Walking distance to the lake taxi for the daytime cruise.

Solo Retreat

Small enough to feel personal — only 28 rooms — and the quiet residential block delivers the kind of writerly retreat that a 300-room resort cannot. A Mansion room with a window onto the gardens, breakfast in the verandah, and the walk into town for the lake-side afternoon is the solo brief at its most legible.
