Estrada Monumental, Funchal  ·  Five-Star  ·  #3 in Madeira

The Cliff Bay

PortoBay's flagship cliff-top resort on the basalt promontory east of Reid's — 200 rooms, the two-Michelin-starred Il Gallo d'Oro, three pools, and the only direct sea-bathing platform on a Funchal five-star outside of Reid's itself.

#3 in Madeira
Anniversary Family Holiday Wellness Retreat Five-Star

"The hotel a sensible traveller books when Reid's is full or one notch above the budget. Same cliff, similar sea access, the only two-Michelin-starred restaurant on Madeira — and the most consistently well-run resort of its scale on the island."

The Hotel

The Cliff Bay is the flagship of PortoBay Hotels & Resorts, the Funchal-headquartered Portuguese hospitality group founded in 1988 by António Trindade. The property opened in 1995 as PortoBay's first-built five-star and remains the group's most decorated address — the only Cliff Bay in Funchal, anchoring an estate of fifteen hotels that today spans Madeira, Algarve, Lisbon, São Paulo, Rio, and Búzios. The hotel occupies a basalt promontory 200 metres east of Belmond Reid's Palace on the same Estrada Monumental cliff-line, with the same essential geography — south-facing Atlantic outlook, direct cliff-side access to the sea — at a more contemporary pitch and a noticeably lower price point.

The 200 rooms (including 20 suites and 4 Presidential Suites) are spread across the main building's seven floors. Every room has a private veranda, sound-proofed windows, and either a Garden View, a Funchal Bay Premium View, or a direct Atlantic Sea View — the latter is the category most worth paying up for, especially on the upper three floors. Standard rooms run 26 square metres; Premium Suites are 60 square metres; the Presidential Suites on the top floor are 130 square metres each, each with a private corner terrace and unobstructed sight lines. A complete renovation cycle was completed across 2021 and 2022 that refreshed every room and the suites without altering the original 1995 footprint.

The dining is the property's signature. Il Gallo d'Oro — chef Benoît Sinthon's Mediterranean-Iberian dining room on the lobby level — has held two Michelin stars since 2017 (one since 2009) and is the only two-star restaurant on Madeira. It is one of the best-regarded fine-dining rooms in Atlantic Portugal and the principal reason serious diners book The Cliff Bay over its neighbour. The Rose Garden (poolside lunch and casual dinner), the Atlantic Bar (cocktails, light dinner, the daily afternoon-tea ritual), and the Blue Lagoon (the heated outdoor pool's day-bar) complete the food and beverage line-up.

The cliff-side leisure infrastructure is the second proposition: an outdoor heated pool, an indoor pool with adjoining hydrotherapy circuit, a tennis court, the Senses Spa (eight treatment rooms running a Comfort Zone protocol), a small gym, and — the most-asked-about feature — the direct, private cliff-side sea-bathing platform reached by a stairway from the pool deck. The platform sits in a small natural cove with a calmer sea than the open Atlantic, suitable for swimming through most of the year. The kids' club runs in school holidays for 4–12s with a six-day rotating programme.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

A premium-bay-view suite, dinner at Il Gallo d'Oro on the anniversary night (the only two-Michelin-starred restaurant on Madeira), the late-afternoon couple's treatment at the Senses Spa, and the funicular-free, direct cliff-side sea-bath at sunrise. The Cliff Bay handles milestone bookings with PortoBay's house consistency and gives back-of-house notice ten days ahead a chance to land properly.

Family Holiday

Connecting-room configurations on floors 3–5, school-holiday kids' club (4–12), the heated pools, the in-cove sea-bathing platform, and the calmer (and more affordable) variant of the cliff-top Funchal proposition compared with Reid's. The Premium Family Suites accommodate two adults and two children at around 50 square metres; connecting two-rooms are a more spacious 60–70 square metres combined.

Wellness Retreat

The Senses Spa runs an unusually well-structured five- and seven-day wellness programme that combines bodywork, hydrotherapy, the gym's personal-training service, and a wellness-tasting menu at the Rose Garden. Less ambitious than the Savoy Palace's three-floor spa but more focused; for guests who want a quiet wellness week with a clear daily rhythm, this is a strong format.

From €280/night. The Presidential Suites and bay-view premium rooms book out three to four months ahead for the May–October peak. Reservations at Il Gallo d'Oro should be made at the same time as the room — the restaurant is very small and the prime tables sell out particularly fast on weekends.
