Bali is really five holidays in one island. Ubud is jungle, culture and wellness; Uluwatu is clifftops and surf; Seminyak is beach and restaurants; Canggu is surf-and-food with a younger crowd; and Nusa Dua is calm, self-contained family resorts. Choose the region before the hotel, because each produces a completely different trip, and the best trips combine two.

The five regions at a glance
Direct answer: match the region to the trip first. Ubud for jungle and wellness, Uluwatu for cliffs and sunsets, Seminyak for a walkable beach, Canggu for surf and food, Nusa Dua for calm family resorts. Here is how they compare.
| Region | Setting | Best for | Signature hotels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ubud | Jungle, rice terraces, rivers | Wellness, culture, honeymoons | COMO Shambhala, Four Seasons Sayan |
| Uluwatu / Bukit | Limestone cliffs, surf | Sunsets, design, couples | Alila Villas, Bulgari, Six Senses |
| Seminyak | Developed beach, restaurants | Walkable beach base | The Legian, The Oberoi |
| Canggu | Surf coast, cafe culture | Longer stays, food, younger crowd | COMO Uma Canggu |
| Nusa Dua | Calm, protected beach | Families, big resorts | The Mulia, St. Regis, Apurva Kempinski |
Ubud: jungle, culture and wellness
Direct answer: choose Ubud for a slow, green, culture-and-wellness trip in the central highlands, jungle, rice terraces and river valleys rather than the coast. It's the spiritual and creative heart of Bali, and the setting for the island's best wellness estates.
Where to stay: COMO Shambhala Estate for wellness, Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve for polish, Capella Ubud for design, and Four Seasons Sayan for families. Honest con: Ubud is not a beach base and the humidity in the valleys is real; transfers to the coast take time. Best for: wellness retreats, honeymoons, cultural travel.

Uluwatu and the Bukit peninsula: cliffs and surf
Direct answer: choose Uluwatu for dramatic limestone cliffs, world-class sunsets and a design-led, surf-leaning scene on Bali's southern peninsula. It's the island's most cinematic setting, and the home of its best clifftop hotels.
Where to stay: Alila Villas Uluwatu for WOHA-designed clifftop architecture, Bulgari Resort Bali for contemporary Italian luxury, and Six Senses Uluwatu for wellness with a view. Honest con: there is no easy swimmable beach at the base of most cliffs, access is by steep paths or cliff lifts, and the exposed plateau can be windy. Best for: couples, sunset chasers, design and surf travellers.

Seminyak: the walkable beach base
Direct answer: choose Seminyak for a beach base where the restaurants, bars and boutiques are at your doorstep. It's the most developed and walkable of Bali's beach strips, busier and more social than the cliffs.
Where to stay: The Legian Seminyak for ocean-view suites on the sand, and The Oberoi Beach Resort Bali, a low-rise pioneer set in 15 acres of gardens on 500 metres of Seminyak beach. Honest con: Seminyak is busy and traffic-heavy, and its surf beach isn't always calm for swimming. Best for: weekend escapes, food-focused travellers, repeat visitors who want convenience.
Canggu: surf and food, younger crowd
Direct answer: choose Canggu for a surf-and-cafe lifestyle at a slower, more independent pace than Seminyak, popular with longer-stay travellers and remote workers. The coastline is black-sand surf beaches lined with beach clubs.
Where to stay: COMO Uma Canggu is the standout, a sleek beachfront resort by Echo Beach with a COMO Shambhala wellness centre and a lively beach club. Honest con: Canggu has grown fast and its narrow roads are congested, and the beaches are for surfing more than swimming. Best for: longer stays, food-and-surf travellers, a younger crowd.
Nusa Dua: calm resorts for families
Direct answer: choose Nusa Dua for calm, protected beaches and large, self-contained resorts, the most conventional and family-friendly part of Bali. The gated enclave trades local character for reliable, kid-ready infrastructure.
Where to stay: The Mulia and Mulia Villas for scale and facilities, The St. Regis Bali Resort for butler-serviced beachfront villas, and The Apurva Kempinski Bali for a dramatic tiered, cliffside-style design on Nusa Dua beach. Honest con: Nusa Dua feels more resort-bubble than authentic Bali, and it's a drive from Ubud's culture and Seminyak's dining. Best for: families, multi-generational groups, conventional beach holidays.

How to combine regions
Direct answer: on a trip of seven nights or more, pair two regions, it produces a far stronger Bali holiday than staying put. Three combinations work best.
Ubud + Uluwatu is the classic: four nights of jungle and wellness, then four nights of clifftop drama and sunsets. Ubud + Seminyak suits couples who want beach and restaurants after the jungle. Ubud + Nusa Lembongan adds a small-island component, roughly a 30-minute boat from Sanur, for travellers who want a quieter finish.
Practical advice for getting around
Direct answer: plan for traffic and hire a driver. Distances are short but journeys are slow.
Allow about 90 minutes Ubud to Uluwatu (up to 2.5 hours in traffic), roughly an hour Ubud to Seminyak, and anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours between the airport and your hotel. Hire a driver rather than self-driving, it's cheaper and far less stressful, and skip Kuta, which is over-developed and off the luxury map. Cultural engagement, temples, markets and ceremonies, is Bali's most underrated value.
When to visit Bali
Direct answer: April, May, June and September are the sweet spot, dry season with lighter crowds and better value than the July to August peak. July and August bring the fullest hotels and highest rates, and Nyepi (the Balinese Day of Silence, usually in March) closes the whole island, including the airport, for 24 hours, which is either a fascinating experience or a day to plan around. November to March is the rainy season, cheaper but with near-daily afternoon downpours; mornings are often still clear.
Region matters here too: Ubud is cooler and greener but more humid year-round, while the Bukit peninsula around Uluwatu is drier and breezier. For the best villas in peak months, book three to six months ahead, and note that the dry season also brings the best surf to the Bukit, part of why Uluwatu draws the crowds it does.
Five rules for choosing a Bali region
- Match the region to the trip: wellness (Ubud), cliffs (Uluwatu), walkable beach (Seminyak), surf-food (Canggu), family resort (Nusa Dua).
- On seven-plus nights, combine two regions, Ubud plus a coast is the strongest structure.
- Build in a 90-minute buffer for any cross-island move, and more in peak traffic.
- Hire a driver; avoid Kuta entirely.
- Pick the villa category deliberately, the pool and view upgrades are usually what make these resorts special.
Common questions
Should I stay in Ubud or Uluwatu?
Ubud is jungle, rice terraces and rivers, cooler, greener and culture-and-wellness focused, but not on the coast. Uluwatu is limestone cliffs and ocean views, better for sunsets and surf, though beaches are reached by steep paths or cliff lifts. The strongest trips pair one Ubud stay with one clifftop or beach stay.
Which part of Bali is best for a first visit?
Combine Ubud and the Bukit peninsula: the first half in Ubud for jungle, culture and wellness, then Uluwatu for clifftop drama and sunsets. That gives you Bali's two most distinct experiences in one trip.
Which Bali region is best for families?
Nusa Dua, for large self-contained resorts on calm, protected sand, such as The Mulia, St. Regis Bali and Apurva Kempinski. For a jungle family base, Four Seasons Sayan in Ubud is the strongest single choice.
How long does it take to get around Bali?
Longer than the map suggests. Ubud to Uluwatu is about 90 minutes (up to 2.5 hours in traffic); Ubud to Seminyak around an hour; airport to anywhere 30 minutes to two hours. Hire a driver rather than self-driving.
