"The reliable city-resort answer in San Juan — a Marriott with a balcony on every room, a beach across the lobby, a casino on the lobby floor, and Old San Juan a twenty-dollar Uber away. Not the design version of Condado, but the version that actually works."

The Hotel

The San Juan Marriott sits on the central Atlantic-facing stretch of Ashford Avenue in Condado — historically the most concentrated luxury-hotel corridor in the Caribbean, the half-mile of beach where the Vanderbilt Hotel opened in 1919, where the original Condado Beach Hotel and the Dupont Plaza were built between the wars, and where the contemporary Condado Plaza, La Concha and the Marriott now sit. The current Marriott building was constructed in 1995 as the replacement for the 1980 Dupont Plaza Hotel (the site of the 1986 New Year's Eve fire). The property runs 531 rooms across a 21-storey beachfront tower with a parallel low-rise lobby and casino block — every guest room has a private balcony, an unusual feature for a tower hotel in San Juan and the property's clearest amenity advantage over the neighbouring Condado Plaza.

Standard rooms run 350 square feet with private balconies overlooking either the Atlantic or the Condado lagoon and Old San Juan skyline; suite categories include the Junior, Hospitality and Presidential, with the Presidential on the 21st floor corner. The 2022 phased renovation refreshed every guest room, rebuilt the lobby and the casino floor, added the Red Coral Lounge as a separate evening venue, and replaced the pool deck. The Marriott Bonvoy concierge tier operates a dedicated lounge on the executive floors. Wi-Fi runs at the brand's standard managed-business speed; the room work desks are large enough for an actual working day.

The food and beverage offer is functional rather than destination-grade. La Vista is the lobby-level all-day room (breakfast buffet, lunch menu, late-night casino diners); Tempo Bar is the lobby bar; Red Coral Lounge runs Asian-influenced small plates and cocktails in the evening; Pool Sushi handles the pool deck. None of these are reasons to book the hotel, but the location compensates — Condado's standalone restaurant scene (1919, Mario Pagán, Marmalade, Santaella, Cocina Abierta, the José Andrés-affiliated Mesa 364 across the lagoon) is the strongest concentration in Puerto Rico and the Marriott is the central walking-base.

The Stellaris Casino — 18,500 square feet, the largest open-floor casino in the city — operates daily and is the property's primary differentiator from the design hotels along the avenue. Around 350 slot machines, blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat, Caribbean poker, and a high-limit room run nightly. The beach across the lobby is the central Condado stretch — moderate surf, lifeguarded year-round, and a quarter-mile of usable sand. Old San Juan is fifteen minutes by Uber; Isla Verde and the airport twenty minutes east. The Marriott handles a serious convention-and-event calendar (the Caribbean's largest non-Atlantis ballroom complex) and remains the most reliable big-group San Juan booking.

Best Occasion Fit

Business

For San Juan business stays of two to five nights — the conference, the financial-services meeting, the Caribbean regional sales kick-off — the Marriott is the most reliable booking on the island. 30,000 square feet of meeting space; the Bonvoy executive lounge for the late-night call back to New York; the Wi-Fi and the work desks specified for actual work. The Red Coral Lounge handles client drinks; Mario Pagán across the avenue handles the closing dinner. Twenty minutes from SJU is the central practical advantage.

Bachelor / Bachelorette

The combination of the casino on the lobby floor, the beach across the lobby, the walking-distance Condado nightlife (La Placita three minutes by Uber, Old San Juan fifteen), and the Hospitality Suite for the welcome-party brief makes the Marriott the obvious Condado bachelor booking. Easier to assemble eight or ten friends in the same hotel here than in any of the smaller boutiques along the avenue.

Family Holiday

Family bookings work at the Marriott because the room balconies make the standard category feel two-room (the parents take the small living-room space, the children the bedroom), the beach is across the lobby with lifeguards, and Old San Juan day-trips are a fifteen-minute Uber for the El Morro castle and the cobbled-streets walk. Less ambitious than the Río Mar but considerably easier for short stays.
