Dar L'Oussia — 24-key riad at the entrance of the Essaouira medina
Medina  ·  Four-Star  ·  #4 in Essaouira

Dar L'Oussia

A 24-key riad on Rue Mohamed Ben Messaoud at the medina's eastern gate — tadelakt walls, zellige floors, an open courtyard around the original fountain, a rooftop terrace over the port, and the most honest price-to-character ratio in the medina.

#4 in Essaouira
Solo Retreat Anniversary Family Holiday Boutique

"The medina at half the price of the Relais & Châteaux up the road, without losing the courtyard, the rooftop, or the tadelakt that makes Essaouira's riads worth crossing the country for."

The Hotel

Dar L'Oussia opened in 2007 inside a restored nineteenth-century merchant's house at the eastern gate of the medina — the most accessible riad address in Essaouira for a guest arriving by car, since the property is one of the few inside the ramparts where a porter can reach the front door with luggage from a vehicle drop-off in under a minute. The restoration was the work of the Moroccan owners (the property has been independently held since opening) with a local tadelakt master and zellige workshop; the result is unfussy, generous-scaled, and quietly one of the more architecturally coherent conversions in the medina. Twenty rooms and four suites — a riad on the larger end of the typical Essaouira inventory, but small enough that the courtyard fountain still does most of the acoustic work.

The 24 keys break down as eleven Comfort Rooms (25 square metres), nine Deluxe and Junior categories, and four Suites at 40 to 55 square metres. Every room opens onto either the central courtyard, a smaller side patio, or the rooftop terrace — there are no interior rooms here, which on a property of this scale is rare. Bathrooms are tadelakt-walled with traditional Italian showers; the suites add separate sitting areas and (in two cases) private terraces with the medina view. The 2022 refresh updated soft furnishings, brought every bathroom to a contemporary standard, and added quiet climate control throughout — the property handles summer well now in a way the original 2007 build could not.

The food-and-beverage operation runs the central courtyard restaurant at all three meals (the Moroccan menu is honest and the wood-fired tagine is the lunch standby), plus a rooftop terrace for sunset drinks and the afternoon mint-tea pause. Breakfast is included in the rate; a half-board option is available for week-long stays. The Spa is small but functional — a single hammam room, two treatment rooms, the standard Moroccan gommage and argan oil massage programme. The property does not have a pool — a notable absence at this rate, and the reason Heure Bleue's rooftop pool down the street is the alternative for guests for whom the pool is non-negotiable.

Service is owner-attentive in the way that small, independently-held riads can be when they get it right — the housekeeping team has been continuous for many years, the front office is bilingual French and English, the concierge runs a credible book for the souks, the port boat trips, and the Argan cooperative half-day. The position is the value proposition: an entry-of-medina address that lets you check in from a vehicle in two minutes, walk to Skala de la Ville in seven, the port in eight, the long beach in twelve, and the souks in three. For solo travellers, for medium-budget anniversaries, and for families that want a riad rather than a beach resort, Dar L'Oussia is the answer in Essaouira.

Best Occasion Fit

Solo Retreat

A Comfort Room facing the courtyard at EUR 90 a night, with breakfast included and a hammam in the basement, is the single best solo-retreat value in coastal Morocco. The medina is small enough to learn in three days; the rooftop terrace at five in the evening with a glass of Moroccan rosé is the working writer's reward. The property treats single travellers without comment — a thing not every Moroccan hotel manages.

Anniversary

For an anniversary couple who want the riad atmosphere without the Relais & Châteaux price tag, Dar L'Oussia is the considered answer. The two Suites with private terrace are the booking; a private dinner on the rooftop can be arranged with twenty-four hours' notice. Three to four nights here pairs naturally with three in Marrakech for a week-long Moroccan anniversary brief.

Family Holiday

For families wanting a medina-and-beach Essaouira stay rather than a resort, the Suites tier (which can accommodate two adults plus two children) is the practical configuration at this price. The pool absence is the operational compromise — the Atlantic beach is twelve minutes' walk south and the Sofitel pool day-pass is available for a long mid-week afternoon. Three nights in the riad is plenty.
