Heure Bleue Palais

A 33-key Relais & Châteaux address inside the ramparts — colonial-era riad restored as an Anglo-Moroccan palace, a rooftop pool above the souks, a hammam below, and the most polished Moroccan dinner service on the Atlantic coast.

"The only address in the Essaouira medina that delivers a Relais & Châteaux dinner, a rooftop pool, and a hammam without making you choose between them. The blue hour itself does the rest."

The Hotel

Heure Bleue Palais opened in 2003 inside a restored colonial-era riad on Rue Ibn Battouta, the medina's eastern interior street, a four-minute walk from Bab Doukkala and seven from the port. The name comes from the Atlantic's "blue hour" — the long evening light between sunset and full dark that gives Essaouira its painterly quality, and that the building's rooftop pool deck and the surrounding ramparts catch for thirty minutes every clear evening. The restoration was led by the owning Beaufrère family with the Atelier Karim Naimark, the Casablanca studio responsible for several of the medina's most considered conversions; the result joined Relais & Châteaux in 2005, where it has remained the only member in the Essaouira region.

The 33 keys are spread across three levels around the original central courtyard, with the rooftop suites and the rooftop pool deck a final layer above. The categorisation runs from Comfort Rooms (around 25–30 square metres, courtyard-facing) through Deluxe Rooms with private patios up to Junior Suites and the named Suites — the Royal Suite, the Heritage Suite — at 60 to 90 square metres, with Italian-shower marble bathrooms, traditional zellige floors, and the property's Anglo-Moroccan furniture vocabulary (the design brief was the colonial-era Anglophile palace, not a strict traditional riad). The 2023 renovation cycle re-soft-furnished every category and lifted the bathrooms across the inventory.

The food-and-beverage operation is the property's quietest brag. The Courtyard Patio runs at lunch under the orange trees — Moroccan tagine, salads, an honest, restrained menu. Le Restaurant Marocain runs at dinner in the formal interior dining room — the most considered Moroccan menu in Essaouira, a tasting menu plus à la carte, with the kitchen led by a Casablanca-trained chef who has held position since 2018. The rooftop terrace pool is open from late spring to late autumn, with bar service from noon; the indoor hammam is the working spa, run on the traditional Moroccan schedule and bookable for two-person and group sessions. The wine list runs to forty-five Moroccan and French references, considered for the size of the property.

Service is the soft-spoken Anglo-Moroccan style that the Beaufrère family established at opening and has not adjusted — front office bilingual French and English, concierge with a deep local book including the medina's musicians, the port's fishermen, the Argan cooperatives outside town, and the Sidi Kaouki kite-surf operations south of the city. The position inside the eighteenth-century ramparts is the central proposition: the hotel sits four minutes from Skala de la Ville, six from the souks, seven from the port, and ten from the long Atlantic beach south of the medina. For Essaouira honeymoons and anniversaries that want the medina atmosphere without the noise of the busier riads near Bab Marrakech, Heure Bleue Palais is the considered answer.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

The Junior Suites with patio and the Royal Suite on the upper floor are the honeymoon booking — quiet, far enough from the courtyard restaurant to sleep in, with the rooftop pool and hammam included in the rate. The Relais & Châteaux dinner programme handles the celebration nights; the Moroccan cooking class with the chef is the optional half-day. Three to four nights in Essaouira pairs with three in Marrakech for a one-week honeymoon brief.

Anniversary

The most considered milestone-anniversary address on the Moroccan Atlantic coast. The Heritage Suite for the major anniversaries; the Royal Suite for the smaller ones. The Relais & Châteaux dinner room handles the celebration evening with a discretion that the larger competition cannot match. The hammam on the second day, the Argan cooperative half-day on the third — Heure Bleue's concierge sequences all of it.

Solo Retreat

For a solo writer's week or a quiet creative retreat in the medina, Heure Bleue's Comfort Rooms (around 25 square metres, courtyard-facing) are the right scale and price. The hammam and the rooftop pool are open daily; the kitchen handles a 7 PM table-for-one without comment; the concierge will arrange Sidi Kaouki for the kite-surf intermission day. Three to seven nights is the sweet spot.
