Amara Cay Resort — oceanfront palms and Atlantic beach at Mile Marker 80 Islamorada
Mile Marker 80, Islamorada  ·  Four-Star  ·  #8 in the Florida Keys

Amara Cay Resort

An oceanfront 110-room resort on the Atlantic side of Islamorada — a single palm-shaded beach, a heated oceanfront pool, and the Reelburn poolside grill — recently refurbished and unfussily modern in a market where most properties are still trading on 1980s carpet.

"Islamorada's most quietly competent resort — every room faces the Atlantic, the lobby ends in a single uninterrupted view, and the pool reaches the sand without a road in between."

The Hotel

Amara Cay Resort sits at Mile Marker 80 in Islamorada, on the Atlantic side of Upper Matecumbe Key, one of the Florida Keys' tightest geographies — the island is barely a quarter mile wide here, so the resort essentially runs from the Overseas Highway to the ocean, with the lobby, pool, beach, and waterline visible in a single line of sight. The property is part of the Islamorada Resort Collection, which clusters five small-to-mid-sized Keys resorts under common ownership; Amara Cay is the largest of them at 110 rooms, and the most recently renovated — a full property refresh was completed in 2024.

The rooms are arranged across a single horseshoe-shaped building that opens to the ocean. Every category faces the water — there are no parking-lot views — and the catalogue is intentionally simple: Premier Guest Rooms (king or two-queen, 320 sq ft, balcony or terrace), Premier Oceanfront Rooms (the upper-floor versions, with a clean Atlantic horizon), and the One-Bedroom Oceanfront Suites (two queens plus a queen sleeper, kitchenette, 550 sq ft — the family booking). The 2024 refurbishment kept the palette intentionally neutral: white-oak floors, linen-weave headboards, soft greys and corals, and the kind of restrained Keys-modern detailing that age out slowly. Premium bedding, large baths with rain showers, smart TVs, and the standard resort-tier amenities; the higher-floor oceanfront categories are the booking worth chasing.

Food and drink centre on Reelburn, the resort's open-air poolside restaurant — a casual Keys-American menu (peel-and-eat shrimp, blackened mahi, key lime pie) that runs from breakfast through dinner. The bar programme is well-edited (frozen daiquiris, a respectable rum list) and the lobby has a small grab-and-go for coffee and provisions. The headline asset is the oceanfront heated pool, which sits directly above the beach with no road or path between it and the sand, plus a small private beach with loungers, hammocks, paddleboards, kayaks, and a complimentary trolley shuttle to the other Islamorada Resort Collection sister properties (which guests can use on the same wristband).

What distinguishes Amara Cay from the Islamorada pack is the discipline of the proposition. There are no kids' clubs, no nightclub, no second restaurant trying to be a destination — just a clean oceanfront resort built around a pool, a beach, and a single restaurant that does its job well. The recent refurbishment means the rooms now sit comfortably in the upper tier of Keys mid-luxury; the location at the geographic centre of Islamorada means Robbie's of Islamorada (the famous tarpon feeding), Founders Park, the fishing charter docks, and Bud N' Mary's Marina are all within a fifteen-minute drive. For travellers who want oceanfront Islamorada without the resort-as-theme-park apparatus, this is the most considered booking under USD 300/night in the Upper Keys.

Best Occasion Fit

Anniversary

For an Islamorada anniversary at the un-grand-but-quietly-good end of the market, Amara Cay's Premier Oceanfront Rooms on the upper floors are the booking — the balcony directly above the pool, the Atlantic unbroken in front of you, and Reelburn three minutes away for dinner. The resort has the right scale for a couple who want oceanfront without a 400-room resort's noise, and Islamorada's sunset on the Gulf side (a ten-minute drive across the island) is the city's one universal evening ritual.

Solo Retreat

Amara Cay is one of the few Islamorada resorts that genuinely works for a solo traveller — the rooms are well-finished without being couple-coded, the pool deck is large enough to spend an unaccompanied afternoon on without feeling exposed, and Reelburn's bar is the kind of restrained, light-on-music room where you can eat alone with a book. Take a half-day fishing charter from Bud N' Mary's, kayak the mangroves at Founders Park, and end at the bar; it is a respectable, low-impact solo week.

Wellness Retreat

There is no spa on property, but Amara Cay's wellness brief is delivered through environment rather than treatment menu — the oceanfront pool, the private beach, the paddleboards and kayaks at no extra charge, and a small fitness centre with morning light. Pair it with a yoga class at one of Islamorada's beach studios, eat lighter at Reelburn (the seafood is the order), and the week resets without the contrived choreography of a destination-spa booking.
