The Hotel

Royal Malewane is the flagship safari property of The Royal Portfolio, the family-owned South African hotel group built by Liz and Stanley Tollman. The lodge sits in the Thornybush Private Game Reserve on the western boundary of the Greater Kruger, where the fence has been removed and game crosses freely between Thornybush and the wider Kruger ecosystem. The original Royal Malewane lodge opened in 1999 with six Luxury Suites and two larger Royal Suites; the property has expanded across two decades to encompass four sister lodges (Malewane Lodge, Waterside, Farmstead, and Masiya's Camp) and three exclusive-use private villas (Africa House, Waterside House, and the Farmhouse).

The original Malewane Lodge — most often the property guests mean when they say "Royal Malewane" — comprises six Luxury Suites and two Royal Suites in a colonial-meets-bush idiom of dark stained timber, brass-fitted bathrooms, four-poster beds in mosquito-net cages, and the signature Royal Malewane viewing deck with private plunge pool. Each suite is around 200 square metres including the deck, sala and pool; the two Royal Suites are larger again with their own private gym and outdoor sala. Waterside is a six-suite sister lodge by the small Thornybush dam (added 2019); Farmstead is the most recently opened (2020) and runs more contemporary in its design language; Masiya's Camp is the four-tent classical-safari option at a slightly more accessible price point. Africa House, the original Tollman-family villa, is the six-bedroom sole-use option and one of the strongest private safari villas in Africa.

The guiding team is the central proposition. Royal Malewane is the only safari lodge in southern Africa with multiple resident Master Trackers (the highest qualification in the FGASA / Tracker Academy framework) on permanent staff. The ranger team holds more combined Master Tracker years than any other operation in the country — Wilson Masia, Wilson Sibuyi, and the late Solly Mhlongo are part of the property's legend — and many of the guides are second-generation Royal Malewane staff. The combination of senior trackers, the open Thornybush–Kruger ecosystem, and the lodge's stable game density (lion, leopard, cheetah and the full Big Five regularly visible on drives) is the reason Royal Malewane sits at the very top tier of African safari lodges.

The Royal Waters Spa at Malewane Lodge is one of the larger and better-equipped spas of any African safari property — a wide treatment menu by the in-house team, hot and cold African baths, steam, sauna, gym, and a lap pool set in the spa garden. Waterside has its slightly smaller Reflections Spa with a hammam. The food programme runs across both Royal Malewane Lodge and the sister properties, with a daily-changing menu and a respected wine cellar curated by The Royal Portfolio's group sommelier team. Conservation is the long-running co-narrative: Royal Malewane funds rhino anti-poaching operations across the Greater Kruger and runs the Mhlongo / Sibuyi guide-training school on the property.

Best Occasion Fit

Honeymoon

Royal Malewane is a strong Kruger honeymoon address with a slightly different argument from Singita's: more colonial-grand, more theatrical (the four-poster mosquito-net beds, the deep brass bathtubs), and with the most experienced guiding team on the continent. Book a Royal Suite for the milestone honeymoon — the private gym and sala are useful for an honest week; the Waterside Pool Suite is the alternative for a quieter version. Sleep-outs on the private deck and bush dinners on the concession are standard.

Family Holiday

The Royal Portfolio is among the strongest of the African safari groups for families — Royal Malewane runs a dedicated children's programme (Cubs Club), accepts children of all ages, and offers private family game-drive vehicles with senior guides who are accredited to handle younger guests. Africa House (the six-bedroom sole-use villa) is the answer for a multi-generational booking; the Farmstead and the Farmhouse are the next options down in scale. The dawn-and-dusk drives with a senior tracker may be the single most formative travel memory a child of safari age can have.

Anniversary

For a milestone anniversary the standard play at Royal Malewane is a four-night stay with the Royal Suite as the room category — the largest Luxury Suite product on the Thornybush concession and a setting that handles a quiet anniversary as readily as a major one. The lodge will arrange a private boma dinner, a champagne sundowner at the herd-watching pan, and a guide-led full-day game-drive picnic into the broader Thornybush as anniversary inclusions.
